Student Workload

Student Workload

At CGS, we understand the importance of balancing academic rigor with the diverse needs of our students. The following guidelines outline the normal and exceptional workload ranges for both full-time and part-time students under the semester and annual systems of study.

Workload for Full-time and Part-time Students
  • Semester System:

    • Full-time Students: The standard workload ranges between eight to twelve (8-12) credit hours per semester.

    • Part-time Students: Typically, part-time students are expected to enroll in five to nine (5-9) credit hours per semester.

  • Annual System:

    • Full-time Students: Under this system, the workload varies from twelve to fifteen (12-15) credit hours.

    • Part-time Students: Part-time students are generally required to take nine to twelve (9-12) credit hours.

Exceptions and Special Considerations
  • Reduced Workload for Part-time Students:

    • In special circumstances, and with the approval of the Program Director and the College of Graduate Studies, part-time students may register for fewer credit hours than the normal workload. This exception is carefully considered on a case-by-case basis to ensure academic success.

  • Registration for Thesis:

    • Registering for a thesis is regarded as equivalent to a normal full-time workload. This acknowledgment reflects the significant commitment and effort involved in thesis research and preparation.

  • Final Semester Adjustments:

    • Students who are anticipated to graduate within one semester may, upon the recommendation of the Program Director and approval from the College of Graduate Studies, be exempted from the maximum study load requirement. This provision is intended to facilitate the timely completion of degree requirements.

  • Minimum Workload in Annual System for Part-time Students:

    • Exceptionally, the minimum workload for part-time students under the annual system may be reduced to as low as six (6) credit hours, subject to agreement from the Program Director and approval by the College of Graduate Studies. This adjustment is made to accommodate unique circumstances while maintaining academic standards.
