Introduction
Securing a supervisor is a pivotal first step in your graduate research journey. The AC1 form facilitates the formal request for a faculty supervisor to guide you through your project, thesis or dissertation. This guide outlines the submission process.
Eligibility and Timing
-
Master’s Thesis Students: Eligible to submit the AC1 form after completing 12 course credits with a minimum GPA of 2.67 to ensure a foundational understanding of your field.
-
Master’s Project Students: Recommended to submit the AC1 form after completing most coursework. A comprehensive exam must be passed before submitting the AC1 form, confirming your readiness for research. The student must also have a minimum GPA of 2.67.
Process Overview
-
Initiating the AC1 Request: After discussing potential academic venues with your Program Director, access the Graduate Services Portal to start your AC1 submission. Specify your research interests and select a potential supervisor. It’s advisable to discuss your research interests with your Program Director and the potential supervisor and their willingness to supervise your work before submitting the form.
-
Notification to Supervisor: Upon submission, the selected supervisor is notified of your request. They have the option to accept or reject the supervision based on their assessment and availability.
-
Supervisor Response: If the supervisor accepts your request, the Program Director is then notified for their approval. The Program Director, in consultation with the Program Committee, will review the request to ensure it aligns with program criteria and faculty expertise.
-
Final Approval: After the Program Director’s approval, the College of Graduate Studies will process and approve the request if there are no holds or issues on the student’s file. You will be officially assigned to your supervisor, marking the beginning of your research journey.
