AC6: Scheduling Defense

The AC6 form is a critical step in the final stages of your graduate research journey, where you schedule the defense of your project, thesis or dissertation. This form facilitates the coordination of your examination, marking a significant milestone towards the completion of your graduate studies.

Eligibility and Timing

  • Completion of Previous Stages: Before you can fill out the AC6 form, ensure that all prior stages, including the external review (AC5), have been successfully completed and approved.

  • Consultation with Supervisor: It’s essential to discuss potential dates for your defense with your supervisor, considering the availability of your examination committee members.

Process Overview

  1. Initiating the AC6 Form: Access the AC6 form on the Graduate Services Portal. You’ll need to propose a date for your defense, which has been agreed upon by you, your supervisor, and ideally, all committee members.

  2. Committee Confirmation: The proposed defense date and committee availability must be confirmed by all members in the form. Once you submit the form, they will be notified and requested to confirm their participation.

  3. Program Director Approval: Your Program Director will review the proposed defense date for final approval, ensuring that it aligns with program schedules and requirements.

  4. Defense Notification: Once approved, the defense date is officially set, and you will receive a notification through the Graduate Services Portal. Information about the defense, including the date, time, and location, will be communicated to all relevant parties.

  5. Media Coverage: If desired, you can request media coverage of your defense by a representative from the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) during the AC6 form submission. This includes taking photos during your defense and featuring your work on the CGS website and social media channels.

Next Step

  • Preparation: With your defense date scheduled, focus on preparing your presentation and anticipating possible questions from your committee members. Utilize this time to review your research thoroughly and practice your defense presentation.

  • Defense Day: On the day of your defense, present your research findings confidently to your examination committee. Be prepared to discuss your work in depth, answer questions, and demonstrate the significance and contributions of your research.

  • Feedback and Revisions: Following your defense, you may receive feedback requiring further revisions to your work. Work closely with your supervisor to address any comments or concerns raised during your defense.
